Mary Catherine Bateson

Motivational Context (RJM)

My whole life I was fascinated by philosophy, science, cybernetics, engineering, fine arts, architecture, and various other unsolved problems without knowing why. My passion for solving problems let me see clearly that all the different approaches I encountered in my life are based on different presuppositions which in the end evoked strong beliefs, ideals and dogmas. Eventually, this process may stop those who believe in these presuppositions from learning.

It took me 60 years to understand why I am drawn to these problems: I do not want to stop myself from learning. I do not want to delude myself like other philosophers, scientists, artists, engineers, architects, and others do because they think they know. I would like to see all my presuppositions in the clear light of alternatives. I found my own conception of the world and my own philosophy that is based on model building and has less dogmas than any other philosophy. From there you can return to the philosophy of your choice by adding dogmas.

The mechanism that helped me to understand all the presuppositions in every area of my thinking is to state problems in problem space – not in solution space. This is not a method, because different people will state the same problem differently. It is a creative technique to get rid of ideals, methods, and dogmas of others.

In my opinion the way we build models is key to all these problems. Model building and problem-solving can lead you to the architecture of a problem, if you are able to determine any presumption that you use for any decision within the solution process. This will lead you to understand that especially philosophers idealize the use of information and contexts.

In the process of learning, you may experience progress and find better presuppositions that help you to delude yourself in a better way again and again and again. At the end of the day, this is the only technique to achieve your very own happiness. Perhaps this is the only way to be happy at all because happiness is a very intimate thing and ideals as well as methods are not anywhere near to a personal thing.

TM42 is the platform to roll out all I have learned so far. It also might help and encourage others in rolling out their own process of learning. It is the platform to get rid of dogmas, idealizations, strong beliefs and bullshit artists.

TM42 is the ultra-pure fun of learning.

TM42

“I have said it thrice: What I tell you three times is true.”
Said the bellman in the agony: “The hunting of the snark”.

Lewis Carroll

Theatrum Mundi 42 (TM42) is a platform to run plays in virtual rooms that are real in different ways. TM42 plays are about our favorite virtual room of all. David Forster Wallace called it the lens of self. In a real language one would call it “Kopfkino”. TM 42 gives the freedom to you to be the lord of your tiny skullsized kingdom. You are at the center of all creation, running your play in a real room (museum, artists space, at home or wherever) and making it virtual by using multichannel audio and statues as actors. The multichannel audio in this case will be based on a group of systems on a chip like odroid’s or raspberry pi’s equipped with linux, high-end audio cards and small studio monitors. You can run your play also in a real virtual room, in your head or at another virtualization platform of your choice that ends in your head.

Like Commedia dell’arte or the famous Augsburger Puppenkiste, TM42 implements the different standard settings of the lens of self as different roles and characters. There are different characters for philosophers, artists, scientists, creators, curators, (postmodern) bullshitters, ghosts, magicians, fairies, magical animals, gods, avant-gardists, and other heroes. Minimalistic plays like “Und erlöse uns von dem Übel” work with just two audio channels and 3 actors: A, O (Ω) and the snake from the Garden of Eden. A is the starting point and O the recreation point of a generation. The snake is simply the snake. Other plays need 12, 13, 25 or almost 42 channels.

TM42 can be used for setting the scene for your artwork (In our case photography, video and so on) or your play is your artwork, or it shows any exhibition you would like to stage. The characters represent the different perspectives on your artwork and the play sets the narrative context. Two groups of characters are undeniable: Gods and the avant-garde (the Messiasse).

The Gods of TM42 are context, metacontext, metametacontext and so on until one comes to MAKE who is the topmost metacontext. Context is the Aristotelian god and MAKEORBUY the universal god of Gregory and Mary Catherine Bateson’s Epistemology of the Sacred. MAKEORBUY is not Christian or Jewish because in the very beginning there was no word but context. MAKEORBUY is the god of cybernetic learning that depends, like the architecture of life, on a hierarchy of contexts.

The avant-garde of TM42 are KünstlerIngenieures (KI), the KünstlerArchitektes (KA) or MeisterArchitektes (MA). That may sound like German to you, but soon, “künstleringenieur”, “künstlerarchitekt”, and “meisterarchitekt” will be normal English words like “kindergarten”.

The TM42 characters and their lenses of self can have different standard settings by education. And they can differ by culture. In almost all cases there will be an idealism that makes their lenses virtual by strong beliefs. Such a strong belief can come from religion, science, fine arts, culture, or real life. In almost any case, idealism and strong beliefs will make you and your character unhappy in the end because you are not learning any more. Idealism and strong beliefs are like knowing anything directly from the start.

For a happy ending, there is only the chance to transcend your culture with problem space, solution space and german engineering by stating all the problems of your everyday life to make your happiness real in all your choices and solutions.

This is the fine art of the meisterarchitekt!

You can state your problems of friendship, love affairs, and love. You can state the problems of your artwork, the artwork of others, or fine art at all. You can state the problems of religion, philosophy, science, culture, politics, or whatever you want to get rid of idealism, strong beliefs, or dogmatism so that you are able to restart learning. This is not a method! This is creating the architecture of your life!

This is the fine art of the meisterarchitekt!

I have said it twice: That alone should encourage the crew.

Stating the problem of your life, will release you from idealism, postmodern illusions and all evil.

Stating the problem of your life will reveal the true architecture of your life
that makes you happy.

This is the fine art of the meisterarchitekt!

I have said it thrice: What I tell you three times is true.
